What Is There to Do in Queensland Around the Games?
More than the Games themselves, because the Games aren't in one place. The 37 proposed venues sit across a Brisbane zone, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Townsville and Cairns, so a 2032 trip is a Queensland trip whether you plan it that way or not. The timing helps: July and August are Brisbane's driest, mildest months, averaging 22–23°C days and about four rain days in July. That's reef weather in the north, hinterland weather in the south, and beach weather on both coasts. Queensland already hosts 25.8 million domestic overnight visitors a year and a record $6.9 billion in international spend, so the infrastructure to do all of it exists now. Below: what's near each venue cluster, what's on in the winter calendar, and the transport facts that decide how far you can roam.

Where are the Games actually held?
Across the state. The Brisbane zone holds 21 of the 37 proposed venues, the Gold Coast seven and the Sunshine Coast four. Regional Queensland gets rowing and canoe sprint on the Fitzroy River at Rockhampton, equestrian at Toowoomba Showgrounds, and football at Barlow Park in Cairns and North Queensland Stadium in Townsville.
The Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority is delivering 17 new or upgraded venues under a $7.1 billion programme, with athlete villages in Brisbane, on the Gold Coast, on the Sunshine Coast and in Rockhampton. The 100-Day Review that set this plan was approved on 8 March 2025, and the Queensland Government accepted more than 90 per cent of its 86 recommendations.

What is the weather like during the Games?
As good as Brisbane gets. Bureau of Meteorology averages: July mean maximum 22.0°C and minimum 10.5°C, with 30.4 mm of rain across about four rain days, the driest month of the year. August is 23.4°C and 11.1°C with 34.2 mm. The Paralympics, from 24 August to 5 September, sit at the warm end of that.
That's the reason the Games are in the winter. It's also the reason the whole state is open. Far North Queensland's dry season runs through the same window, which is what makes a reef leg workable in a trip built around football in Cairns or Townsville.
Mornings are cold by Brisbane standards. A 10°C start at an early athletics session is normal. Pack for it.
What's on in Queensland in July, August and September?
A full winter calendar, and none of it has been rescheduled for 2032 yet. Using 2026 dates: Gold Coast Marathon 4–5 July, Cairns Indigenous Art Fair 9–12 July, Airlie Beach Race Week 6–13 August, the Ekka 8–16 August, Hamilton Island Race Week 15–22 August, Birdsville Races 4–5 September, Brisbane Festival 4–26 September.
The one to watch is the Ekka. The Royal Queensland Show runs for nine days every August at the RNA Showgrounds, and in 2026 it marked its 150th year. The Showgrounds is being upgraded to a 20,000-capacity Games venue and will hold the Brisbane athletes' village. Whether the 2032 show moves, shrinks or shares the site has not been announced by the RNA or the organising committee. We'll update this page when it is.
Brisbane Festival's September dates line up with the Paralympics, and the two Whitsunday race weeks sit inside the Olympic fortnight. Birdsville, 1,600 km west, is the one for people who want the Queensland nobody else at the Games will see.
Can you do the reef and the Games in one trip?
Yes, and the venue map makes it easy. Cairns and Townsville both host Games football and both are reef departure points. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority recorded 2.34 million visitors in 2024, and July and August are dry-season months in the north.
The Cairns Indigenous Art Fair falls in the same month. Its 2026 edition ran 9–12 July with a free public programme, which puts it in the week before the opening ceremony on 2032's calendar if the dates hold.
Further south, K'gari is the world's largest sand island, 120 km long and World Heritage listed since 1992. It's reachable from Hervey Bay, roughly halfway between Brisbane and Rockhampton, which makes it a natural stop for anyone driving to the rowing.
What's free in Brisbane?
Streets Beach at South Bank, Australia's only inner-city man-made beach, is free and patrolled year-round, and it sits a short walk from the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and the river. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, 12 km from the CBD, charges entry; the Story Bridge climb, 80 metres above the river over about two hours, is a paid tour.

How do you get around?
Brisbane Metro's first route opened on 28 January 2025 between the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and UQ Lakes. Cross River Rail's opening date is not settled; the Queensland Government has put the project's cost above $17 billion and flagged completion as late as 2029. The Sunshine Coast line's Beerburrum to Nambour upgrade began main construction in late 2025.
The Gold Coast lost a rail link it was counting on. Light Rail Stage 4, from Burleigh Heads to Coolangatta via the airport, was cancelled after a Queensland Government review on 1 September 2025. The state has since talked about a bus rapid transit replacement from Robina to Coolangatta, which we'll cover properly when Transport and Main Roads publishes the detail.

Where should you stay for a Queensland-wide trip?
Decide by event, then by region. Brisbane for ceremonies, athletics and aquatics. The Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast if you'd rather trade a commute for a beach. Cairns or Townsville for football and the reef. Rockhampton for rowing. The state has about 46,000 hotel rooms against 120,000 in Los Angeles, so the regions will matter more than they did in Paris.

What changed in 2026?
Three things. Queensland set an international visitor spend record of $6.9 billion in the year to June 2025. The Gold Coast lost its airport light rail on 1 September 2025 and Sunshine Coast rail construction started. And Queensland launched a First Nations Tourism Strategy for 2026–2032 in September 2026, alongside the state's Destination 2045 target to double visitor spend to $84 billion.
What hasn't changed: no 2032 event calendar, no live-site plan, no school holiday dates past 2029, and no decision on the Ekka. This page tracks all four.
