Getting Around Brisbane 2032

Brisbane River and city
Brisbane runs on its river and its rail. You won't need a car.

Here's the short version: leave the hire car at home. Brisbane's venues cluster around the river and the inner city, and the whole place runs on Translink — trains, buses, and the CityCat ferries that double as the best cheap tour in town. You tap on and off with a Go Card. On top of that, the city's building serious new transport for the Games: Cross River Rail, a new underground line adding four stations beneath the CBD, and an expanding Brisbane Metro bus network with a planned airport link. For most visitors, a train-and-ferry combo will cover nearly every day. One thing that's not confirmed yet: whether a Games ticket gets you free public transport. Some past Olympics have bundled it. Brisbane hasn't said either way.

TL;DR
  • You won't need a car — Translink trains, buses and CityCats reach the venues. Pay with a Go Card.
  • Cross River Rail adds a new underground line and four CBD stations (Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street, Roma Street), plus an Exhibition station upgrade near the main stadium precinct.
  • Brisbane Metro (bus rapid transit) is expanding, with a planned link to the airport.
  • Free public transport for ticket holders is not confirmed (we'll update if it's announced).

Do you actually need a car?

Almost certainly not. The venues sit close to the river and the inner city, and the train, bus and ferry network reaches them all. A hire car runs real money once you add Games-time parking, and you'll spend the difference sitting in traffic. Skip it and ride.

What's the Go Card and how do you pay?

The Go Card is South East Queensland's tap-on travel card — one card for trains, buses and CityCat ferries right across the network. Pick one up when you land. Closer to 2032, keep an eye out for contactless and phone-based options, which are rolling out. Either way, it's the cheapest way to get around.

What is Cross River Rail, and why does it matter?

It's a new underground rail line through the middle of Brisbane, adding four stations — Boggo Road, Woolloongabba, Albert Street and Roma Street — and upgrading Exhibition station near the Victoria Park stadium precinct. It's being delivered this decade specifically to move big crowds through the city centre. For a visitor, that means faster, less crowded trips between the inner-city venues.

How do you get in from the airport?

Brisbane Airport connects to the city by the Airtrain, and the Brisbane Metro network has an airport extension planned in time for the Games. Whichever's running when you visit, you can reach the CBD without hiring a car or relying on a cab.

Will transport be free with a ticket?

Not confirmed. Several past Games have folded public transport into the event ticket, and it would fit Brisbane's "get people out of cars" plan — but organisers haven't announced it. Treat it as a maybe, and we'll update this page the moment there's an official call.
