Brisbane 2032 Stadium: Victoria Park update

The main stadium rises just north of the CBD, at Victoria Park.

The diggers are in. After years of arguments about where Brisbane's main Olympic stadium would go, work has actually started at Victoria Park. The Games infrastructure authority took possession of the site on 1 June 2026 and began early works — investigations, demolition, and setting up the construction zone on the Herston side. Federal environmental approval landed in May 2026, clearing a big hurdle. Bigger earthmoving follows late this year into early 2027. The finished venue is a 63,000-seat stadium built for the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics, and it's targeted for completion in 2031, a year before the Games. After 2032 it takes over from the Gabba as Brisbane's main football and cricket ground.

TL;DR
  • The infrastructure authority took over Victoria Park on 1 June 2026; early works have begun.
  • Federal environmental approval was granted in May 2026.
  • Bulk earthworks run late 2026 into early 2027; the early-works contract is due to be awarded soon.
  • The 63,000-seat stadium is targeted for completion in 2031 — ceremonies and athletics.

What's happening at the site right now?

Early works, not the big build yet. That means site investigations, demolition of some existing infrastructure, and establishing construction areas on the Herston side of the park. The heavy earthmoving — the part that visibly turns a park into a stadium site — is scheduled to start between late 2026 and early 2027, once the early-works contractor is locked in.

What's the timeline to 2032?

Design is well advanced after architects were appointed in January 2026. Construction ramps through 2027 onward, with the stadium aimed at completion in 2031. That one-year buffer before the Games is deliberate — it leaves room for test events and fit-out before the world shows up.

Where to stay near Victoria Park

The stadium sits just north of the CBD, near Herston and Spring Hill — both walkable or a short hop to the venue and easy on public transport. Demand around the Games will be brutal, so the smart move is to book a free-cancellation room now and lock the price in. You can always upgrade later.
